Running on a treadmill can be dreadful, but cardio is FABULOUS! Cardio is an essential part of our physical health and so many people who think the only way to get it is to hop on a treadmill or elliptical for 30-45 min but that is so FALSE! There are many different ways to get your heart pumping and we came up with a few ideas that will have you loving cardio in no time.
Bust a Move: dancing is a great way to have fun and burn calories. Shaking your booty in a Zumba class can burn up to 540 calories per hour class. Dancing is a full body workout so not only are you working your heart but your arms legs and core too! If you can’t make it to a gym class, turn up the music in your living room and make up your own routine.
Take a Hike: Hiking is a great way to get get fresh air and keep your hearth healthy. Hiking burns about 240 calories per hour and its a great activity to do with friends. So grab a few of your besties, pack a picnic and find a nearby hiking trail. But don’t forget the sunscreen!
Stairway to Cardio Heaven: Doing a stair workout is another amazing full body cardio workout. Doing the stairs for an hour can burn up to 550 calories per hour. Stair climbing is also a full body workout because you have to use your leg muscles to lift yourself up, you’ll work your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and hip flexors. You are also using your core to stabilize your body especially when walking down the stairs.
A playground favorite: Who knew that a jumping rope burns a whopping 600 calories per hour! All you need is a rope and some space to jump so throw on some your favorite tunes and get hopping. If you have little ones this is a great one to get them involved too!
Battle ropes: one of our favorite cardio workouts! This form of cardio has zero impact on your knees and works your arms and core too! You can find battle ropes in many gyms these days. Battle ropes come in many weights so if you’re new to them, start light and work your way up as to not put any stress on your back. A few movements to try with battle ropes include: Jumping Jacks, Slams (moving both arms up and down at the same to time create a ripple effect, Alternate Waves (alternating raising and lower each arm to create a ripple effect and In & Out waves (holding each rope and hip height extending both arms out to the side and bringing them back to center to create a side ripple effect). Try 3 reps of each of these for 20 seconds.
Take the Plunge: Swimming works your entire body and is another zero impact form of cardio. Aside from getting a killer cardio working, swimming also strengthens muscles, endurance, posture, and flexibility all at the same time. If you aren’t completely comfortable in the water start by using a kick board to help you stay afloat and get assimilated to the new form of cardio. For all you mermaids, grab a pair of goggles and a cap (no chlorine hair!) and find the nearest pool!
