As the year comes to an end, the hustle and bustle of traveling begins. The end destination is always fun however when figuring out what to pack, how to pack, toiletries, tickets (if you’re flying), etc. can give us quite the headache. As experienced travelers ourselves, we have mastered the art of quickly and efficiently packing and here is how:
Depending on where you are headed, it’s a given that you’ll either need a full-size or a mini suitcase but what about your purse, and then a carry on? If you are flying somewhere you are limited to what you can bring on the plane but even if you are driving, you don’t want to bring too much. With the right bag, a little planning, and right mentality, you’re on your way to minimizing the traveling stress.
The Bag: The key to packing for a quick weekend getaway all begins with the right travel bags. One that is larger that your average tote bag or purse yet smaller than a mini suitcase. This bag is where all of your toiletries, makeup, wallet, eye masks, iPad/iPod, basically where your essentials should go. If you do enough traveling, invest in a quality leather bag that you can have for years. If you don’t want to invest in a leather bag, we love this one from Lo and Sons.
Packing Smart: Figuring out what to pack can also be a challenge if you haven’t done your homework. We suggest taking 15 min a few days before you leave to check the whether and talk to family or friends about what you guys plan on doing. This little bit of preparation keeps you from packing everything but the kitchen sink. If you have an idea of what vacation activities you will be partaking in you can better plan your outfits and be confident in what you brought. If you don’t have any idea of what you are doing, bring a little bit of everything but be conservative and realistic. Are you really going to wear 5 skirts and 2 silk dresses in a weekend?
Toiletries: Bring your essentials, not everything you can think of. As women we love the idea of being prepared for everything but when it comes to makeup and skincare, chances are you don’t need to bring your entire makeup bag. Downsize for the weekend and bring what you use on a daily basis and throw in a few extras to glam up your nighttime look. If you’ve got samples, 2-in-1 type or travel-sized products strewn in a drawer somewhere, break those bad boys out. We are all about saving space and consolidating here!
Shoes: This can sometimes be the hardest to pack. They are heavy, take up space, you don’t want to ruin them, etc. Once you have figured out what shoes you want to bring, we suggest wearing your heaviest or largest shoes en route to your destination. For example, wearing your riding boots will take up less space than packing them. Another helpful tip would be to bring shoes that can be used a couple of times on the trip so that you don’t have to pack so many pairs. A neutral pair of heels that can be worn with jeans and dresses will save space instead of packing specific pairs for each outfit. Overall be realistic with what you bring. Do you need 3 pairs of black heels? Probably not. A good traveling shoe arsenal may include: running shoes, one pair of boots, heels, flats, and a pair of sandals.
Color Scheme: If you can stick to a general color palate such as neutrals or blacks so you can limit what you bring. This is significantly harder said than done and requires much more planning but if you can plan ahead this will save you a ton of space, especially in the shoe department.
While there is no guideline to packing, the tips we mentioned above have definitely helped our packing routine. What are some of your favorite packing tricks?
